If you suffer from back pain, staying indoors during the coronavirus quarantine can be terrible. The situation is even worse for patients who live alone and have no one to turn to for help.
Our pain management experts in Aventura and pain management doctors in Pembroke Pines are here to help patients in need of care. At Pain Care Specialists, we understand the struggles pain patients face during the current health crisis.
If you are unable to engage in normal activities and exercise during the pandemic, there are some simple things you can do at home to reduce back pain.
1. Refuse to sit for long periods of time
If you have the option of working from home during the coronavirus lockdown, try getting up from your desk every half hour. Set an alarm on your phone. Walk around the table or house for at least five minutes, maintaining an upright position.
Don’t sit down for hours at a time as this may trigger back pain. Regular but brief exercise every 30 minutes or so can also help improve blood circulation and flush out toxins from the body that cause pain and inflammation in the body. Studies show that standing can break down fat in the blood and reduce the risk of lifestyle diseases.
2. While you’re doing this, stretch
If you sit for too long, it may be helpful to stretch your hamstrings to loosen tight muscles. If you bend forward or squat, make sure you’re doing it correctly. Pushing yourself beyond your limits, especially if you’re not used to physical activity, can lead to injuries and conditions like herniated discs.
Stretching can make your muscles stronger and more flexible. It also prevents your muscles from contracting and tensing. Try stretching at the beginning of the day and before bed. A gentle five-minute stretch can do wonders for your back.
3. Perform waist rolls
A lumbar cushion is a cushion that is rolled up like a log and placed behind a home office chair. Physiotherapists, chiropractors, and pain management experts in Pembroke Pines recommend lumbar rolling for back pain relief.
If you are unable to purchase lumbar rolls because stores are currently closed, you can use a rolled pillow or towel. Use a product that is thick enough to fully support your natural curves.
At first, you may find the lumbar roll a bit distracting. After a few days, you’ll get used to placing it on the back of your chair, and you’ll benefit from reduced back pain.
4. Don’t hunch over when sitting
Poor posture can easily lead to back pain, especially when you sit for long periods of time. If you are working, try to avoid leaning your shoulders forward. Sit up, relax, and keep your back supported.
5. Stock up on back pain medication
Since it’s even more important to stay home and limit activity now, you may want to stock up on back pain medication just in case. If you are taking prescription medications, it is best to discuss your 30 or 90-day regimen with your Aventura pain management physician.
